Tampa Museum of Art
This mod museum boasts impressive classical Greek and Roman antiquities. It also features rotating exhibitions - from the avant-garde to old masters, from sculpture and photography to works by emerging Floridian artists. Overlooking the Hillsborough River, the glassed-in Terrace Gallery provides a great backdrop for sculptures, and the grounds are a great spot for a picnic.
Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino
Seminole Indian Casino is a classic whistles-and-bells joint, sucking in those who love the thrill of winning big time. It's the archetype of the modern casino: dazzling to the point of intoxication and designed to make you feel anything's possible.
Tampa Theatre
The still-operational Tampa Theatre on Franklin St is a beautiful palace of a place built in 1926 and decorated with a star-spangled ceiling, mythological statues and a very large, ear-shaking Wurlitzer. Audiences turn out for independent and classic films, concerts and other special events.
Tampa Bay Performing Arts Centre
Beautifully situated on a river park, the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center is the largest such centre south of the Kennedy Arts Center in Washington DC. It's home to major concerts, touring Broadway productions, plays, the Tampa Ballet and special events. There are four theatres: small, big and very big, and a three-floor cabaret to boot.
Side Bern's
The Bern's Steak House spin-off is nothing like its parent. You'll find contemporary fusion cuisine here, which utilises spices from around the world to enliven the mostly seafood dishes. Ostrich or lamb devotees need not worry, though: you'll find these on the menu, too. Reservations suggested.
Florida Aquarium
The wonderful three-storey Florida Aquarium's thematic exhibits range from a wetlands recreation - complete with limestone cave, mist-topped water, mangroves and resident turtles (plus some alligator spawn) - to an indoor dune-studded beach and a coral reef that's held prisoner in a very large tank.
Bern's Steak House
Tampa's landmark restaurant serves some of the best steaks east of the west. Downstairs, the slick atmosphere is heavy on red velvet, gold leaf and statuary. Upstairs, where all patrons head for sweets in the cigar-friendly dessert room, the tables are made from redwood wine casks. Reservations recommended.
Green Iguana Bar & Grill
Situated in the midst of the famous (or infamous) Ybor City entertainment strip, the Green Iguana is a cool but laidback bar and restaurant (with Floribbean cuisine) during the day. By night, though, it explodes with either high-energy cover bands or high-energy, DJ-driven dance music. And there's cheap drinks on Wednesday.
Columbia Restaurant
Family-owned since it opened in 1905, Columbia Restaurant is the oldest restaurant in Florida and legitimately historical. It's a gaudy, glitzy place many people write off as a tourist trap. We think it's worth a visit, for the paella à la Valenciana alone. The flamenco shows should whip you up into the required mood.
Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI)
With upwards of 450 'minds-on' activities, hyperactive kids will think they're in heaven at this museum. There is a cool hot-air balloon exhibit, as well as ones on the human body and the annual garbage pile generated by the average American. Enter a flight avionics simulator or a Gulf Coast hurricane before hitting the trail through the wetland preserve.
Busch Gardens
Competing with Walt Disney World to empty the wallets of Floridian fun park addicts is Busch Gardens, an African-themed exercise in big-budget amusement that's located on its very own boulevard. Busch is equipped with a number of rides designed to scare the crap out of you and everyone in your immediate vicinity.
